Going back to school means rediscovering routines and habits that you forgot in the summer. The start of the school year can also bring less pleasant experiences, such as lice.
7 tips against lice

Here are 7 tips for preventing and dealing with the situation if your child has lice.

What do you know about lice

Lice are wingless insects that live in human hair. They are more common in children.

These insects feed on small amounts of blood several times a day. That explains why they are so annoying. Your bites itch.

If the affected person scratches too hard, the skin can become irritated and wounds or even infections can develop.

They are also very contagious. You can easily hop from head to head. Lice survive on the human head for up to 30 days and can lay up to 8 eggs per day on it.

Because they multiply so quickly, it is best to treat the infestation as soon as possible.

7 tips to keep your child from getting lice

1. Information from your child’s school

If your child’s school warns you of the presence of lice, you should pull out a fine comb. After school, comb your child’s hair carefully to remove any lice or eggs.

It’s also important to let your child’s school know if you discover that your child has lice. This will help keep the epidemic from spreading to everyone else in your child’s class.

Routine checks on your child’s scalp can quickly identify and eliminate lice or nits. If you spot the problem early on, they will be prevented from nesting in your child’s hair or from multiplying too much.

It is best if you divide your child’s hair into 4 sections. Carefully and slowly check each section with a fine comb.

For the best possible result, you can use a special metal comb, the nit comb, which was specially developed for removing lice and eggs.

2. Do not share anything with others

It is very important that your child does not share combs, hats, or hair accessories with other children. Lice don’t fly or jump head to head. Rather, they grab the individual hair and quickly crawl from head to head.

The best way to prevent lice from spreading is to keep children from sharing anything that comes in contact with their head.

3. Vinegar

Vinegar is a great tool when it comes to preventing lice. Rinse your child’s head with an equal part mixture of vinegar and warm water.

Don’t rinse out the vinegar. Instead, let it soak in. The vinegar will help remove any nits that managed to get caught in the child’s hair. This is independent of the use of a fine comb.

4. Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is one of the best natural remedies for lice.

It helps get rid of them in a completely natural way. To treat your child, dilute 10 drops of tea tree oil in 60 ml of water. You can then pour the mixture into a spray bottle.

Shake the solution well and spray evenly over your child’s hair. Focus especially on the neck and the area behind the ears. Make sure that you spray these areas particularly well.

Then cover your child’s ears with a towel or shower cap and let the tea tree oil soak in for 30 minutes. It loosens the nits in your child’s hair and makes them easy to remove with a metallic nit comb.

5. Lavender

Lavender is known for its antiseptic properties and pleasant smell. But it’s also perfect against lice.

To use it properly, tie your little one’s hair in a ponytail and add a few drops of lavender essence behind your child’s ears. It acts as a natural repellent and prevents the lice from jumping on his head and staying there.
Lavender helps prevent lice, but does not serve to kill any lice or nits that are present.

6. Rosemary

The scent of this plant repels lice. Just add a few drops to your child’s shampoo. Massage the shampoo solution into your child’s hair and scalp and leave for 30 minutes. Then rinse well.

If you use rosemary oil or any other essential oil, be careful not to get it in your child’s eyes.

7. Pharmaceutical products

There are a variety of shampoos, creams and foam against lice available in your local pharmacy.

All of these products should be applied to dry hair with a gentle massage. Make sure you follow the product directions exactly.

Usually these products are very effective. You will usually have to repeat the treatment after a few days for the problem to be completely eliminated.
